It was in the year 1965 when a group of 25 young and enthusiastic men under the leadership of Sri Jaipal Singh along with other stalwarts of the trade felt the need to unite the then dealers under one roof so that representation before any statutory body could carry weight and thus Guwahati Motor Parts Traders Association was formed on 17th December 1965 and registered under the Societies Act (the name has since been amended in 2002). It is more than 5 decades now since the GMTA came into existence and the seed of an idea has today developed into a strong tree covering more than 400 dealers from Guwahati.

Much water has flown down the Brahmaputra and today the Association has an unblemished reputation as one of the best run Automobile Associations in the country.

In the year 1969 GMTA got its affiliation to the Federation of All India Automobile SpareParts Dealers Association (FAIASPDA). Since then GMTA has closely worked and helped FAIASPDA in all its ventures time to time. Another feather in the cap of GMTA was added when its nominee Sri S S Lohia was elected as the president of FAIASPDA in the year 1982 and under his leadership FAIASPDA achieved a new height. Sri Kamal Baid was elected as senior vice president of FAIASPDA in the year 2023.

The strength of any Association is its members who have stood by it by providing it with leaders to run it and also have committed themselves to community brotherhood and have fostered the spirit of togetherness at all times.

Today GMTA along with the acquisition of large conference hall and a spacious office in the heart of city has become a much sought after destination for trade meetings and social gatherings.

The reputation of the Association has been further enhanced by its commitment to social responsibility. Beside successfully handling various GST related and other legal issues of the trade and its members the GMTA regularly organizes social events for its members and their families.
